Stavoren and it’s surroundings
On the south-western tip of Friesland lies Stavoren. The oldest of the 11 Frisian towns and ones the homeport of Frisain Kings and sailors. The overseas shipping trade brought wealth and prosperity to Stavoren. Many Vikings and Dutch counts profited from this trade. After the eighteenth century Stavoren suffered a lot of misfortune, the most important adversity is described in the legend of ‘The Lady of Stavoren’. The Lady still watches over the old harbour today.
Stavoren was once a prominent Hansa town, but nowadays it is known for its excellent aquatic sports facilities. During the summer months Stavoren is a vibrant and lively town and a popular place to moor. But we also recommend to visit Stavoren during the colder months, when the real and authentic town is unveiled; watch the traditional charter fleet and fishing boats which are moored in the old harbour, stroll over the dyke or visit the impressive ‘J.L. Hooglandgemaal’, a pumping station, which regulates the water level in Friesland and the IJsselmeer.
