Hindeloopen and it’s surroundings
The magical street scene of Hindeloopen: cosy streets, wooden bridges over narrow canals. The many art shops and studios create a colourful scene. The old harbour is a popular place to visit with it’s many outdoor cafés. Hindeloopen used to be a closed community with it’s own culture, language and unique folkloric costumes. It was and is famous in the Netherlands and beyond for it’s richly painted furniture and other objects. This unique folk art made Hindeloopen in the 17th and 18th century very prosperous, which can still be seen at the capital captains homes. Other distinct buildings are the Hidde Nijland Museum, the lock house with it’s so called ‘lie bench’ dating from 1619, the protestant church from 1632 and the Wester-tower dating from 1593.
